We regularly post gardening tips on the Primrose Facebook page. Here is a selection of the best ones from last month.
- Outdoor lighting can create a relaxing atmosphere where you can relax and enjoy a glass of wine after work.
- A nice way to make growing herbs indoors into decorative features.
- Something fun to get the children interested in growing flowers.
- Try something different and plant tomatoes in hanging baskets for a unique way of growing vegetables.
- You could always think inside the box when it comes to planning your garden – try clean linear planning to create a modern edge.
- Recycle old plastic bottles by cutting in half and using as mini-greenhouses or cloches to aid you in growing your plants, giving saplings shelter from cold temperatures and the wind.
- Stairstep planters: An innovative way to decrease the amount of space your vegetable plots take up, giving you much more room than regular vegetable patches.
- Be creative with materials like this person here who’s created decorative pieces through the use of left over bricks.
- If you get slugs in your garden try using this simple non-chemical tip of erecting a barrier around your plants and smearing vaseline/petroleum jelly on the barrier. Apparently slugs hate the stuff and won’t try to get over it.
- If you love butterflies be sure to add some Buddleja (or Buddleia) to your garden. It’s very easy to grow and it adapts to most soil types and flower for a long duration.
- Rock Gardens can add to the visual aesthetics of your garden especially with tumbling rock plants which are generally simple and easy to care for.
- Be sure to get rid of weeds by the root that are growing nearby to your flowers – weeds will take moisture and nutrients out of the soil which would otherwise be used by your flowers.
- If you’ve got some plants which are refusing to grow in your garden, check what type of soil you have, ie acidic, alkaline, clay – as this may effect which plants will grow best.
- Research different flowers to plant in your borders – check what time they flower and how long for to ensure that there is always some form of colour in your borders, not just bare plants for the later months of the year.
- When positioning birdhouses be sure not to position the house in direct sunlight as this can heat up the birdhouses and potentially hard the birds. Try to position them in partial or full shade where possible.
- Lavender is easy to grow and brings colour and a beautiful fragrance to your garden. It’s also ideal to pick and have in the house as an organic air freshener. Try it out!
- When thinking of planting roses try and find a spot in the garden that gets sunlight for most of the day. The roots grow quite deep so be sure that there is enough room when planting.
