We regularly post gardening tips on the Primrose Facebook page. Here is a selection of the best ones from last month.
- There’s plenty to do in the garden this month, from deadheading your roses, to maintaining the lawn, to harvesting apples!
- Fairy lights are a little touch that can make a dramatic effect in the garden or on the patio!
- Use epsom salts to treat magnesium deficiency.
- Pumpkins come with their own planter – put some soil inside, water it, and the seeds will sprout.
- Grow your own gorgeous organic garlic with this guide.
- Divide older irises to stimulate blooming.
- Growing plants upside-down is a great way to save floor or ground space. It not only works for flowers, but also veg like tomatoes and cucumbers too (albeit in larger containers!).
- Spiders vs conkers: the definitive guide.
- Do you know what type of soil you have? It’s very helpful to know!
- Flowers frozen inside ice cubes are a lovely touch to a barbecue or dinner party. There are also a wide variety of lovely edible flowers you can use.
- Turmeric is a useful spice to have around, especially if you like to cook curries! It can’t be grown from seed, but grows readily from root cuttings.
- Baffled by pruning? Here’s what you need to know. Remember when trimming hedges that the top should be narrower than the bottom, to allow light to reach the branches at the base.
- Can you tell the difference between a blackberry and a black raspberry? They’re two distinct plants.
- Did you know roses love banana peels?
- You can build your own vertical garden to hang on the wall. Pretty as a picture!
- Raspberries are relatively easy to grow in the UK – try growing strawberries and raspberries to provide home grown organic fruit for you and your family.
- Make sure you get the right plants for your garden soil type. For example, ericaceous plants – like Rhododendrons – dislike lime-based soils and prefer acidic conditions to thrive and flower.
- Garden fact: On average 200 slugs live in a cubic metre/yard of soil. Ew!
- Sadly hedgehogs have declined by 25% in the last 10 years – if you know you get hedgehogs try not to block up their holes in the fencing if possible. Also don’t feed them milk as this can make them ill, try hedgehog friendly biscuits instead.
- Snapdragons are beautiful flowers but can also be seen as “interactive flowers” – if you squeeze the bottom of the flower it makes a “snapping” action. Snapdragons thrive in more neutral pH soil:
