How-To Guide

Growing your own potatoes produces luxurious, soft spuds you just can’t buy. Plant them in a container so you can move it to sheltered and warm spots for fast growing, and to keep your crops safe from pests. Spring or early August is the best time to plant

Sprout your potatoes

Sprout the seed potatoes supported with the eyes facing up, in an enclosed space. An egg carton or propagator would do the trick.

Line your potato container

Line the container with about 15cm of compost.

Plant your potatoes

Add the potato tubers, shoots upwards, one per 10L of container (about 15cm space around and under each one).

Cover your potatoes

Cover with another 10-15cm of compost and water in well.

Check your potatoes

After around 10 weeks when the plants flower, feel around in the soil (really get your hands in there, great for getting the kids involved!) to test if the potatoes are big enough to harvest.

If they are to your liking, harvest away!
